Chris,

I agree with Peter. There are many features of the SWORD API that are
under-utilized.

I would suggest that you also take a look at some of the other SWORD /
JSword frontends that are not as widely publicised, just to help stimulate
further ideas. 

For example, I am quite impressed with  http://thegoan.com/firebible/
FireBible , which is a Firefox add-on developed by Brian Fernandes in Pune.
