Agreed.  The two bugs you mention below are as you say.  I will close 
one and try to apply the submitted patch for the other.  I am suspicious 
that we might use 'open' without perms in other places, but since he 
claims his patch makes things compile on the newer gcc, it's likely I'm 
wrong.  I'll do a quick grep to check for others though.

Thanks for the feedback.  Hope we can get this out this weekend for you 
guys.  Again, my apologies for once again taking longer than I had hoped 
3 weeks ago.
