I'm not sure if <year type="gyear"> is what I was looking for.

I was thinking more about:

<xs:element name="year">
	<xs:complexType>
		<xs:simpleContent>
			<xs:extension base="xs:gYearMonth">
				<xs:attributeGroup
ref="globalAttributesWithType/>
			</xs:extension>
		</xs:simpleContent>
	</xs:complexType>
</xs:element>

if not xs:gYearMonth then xs:gYear
