I use the speak feature almost daily, it is a major reason why I use
And-Bible.  I mostly use the feature to listen to the bible (various
English versions) in the morning while commuting. I also sometimes use
it in the evening at home with headphones.  I do hope you expand the
TTS UI and features, I find it very useful indeed.

I have once come across the "need to press speak twice" issue. (G2-Android2.2)
