Yes, editing the original source is bad.
Probably we have to edit QStyleSheet / QStyleSheetItem / QTextDocument / ....

Probably inherit from QTextEdit, and make as few changes as possible to have 
access to the public mambers. But we have also to reimplement QTextDocument 
etc.

As a workaround OPtionsdialog->Fonts->Select as font size "4"
I'll change it later if I find time.
