This is a really frustrating bug that we are currently looking into to try to solve! More details about forcing an app to close is available at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5137?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US And we're hoping to have a new version of PocketSword out as soon as this issue is solved |

Hi, Grace and Peace to you through Jesus Christ our Lord. In Korea, iOS only support one font - Gothic Korean letter. For example "Hancom Office Hanword Viewer" offer that feature in iOS. Thank you very much! |

Hi Lee, Unfortunately we are unable to provide such a feature for any iOS apps. You may only use fonts that come built-in to either the OS or to the app. Right now we have included one extra extra font, code2000, and the rest of the fonts available are available in iOS. The example you provided is a feature available in a Mac app, not an iOS app. And the iOS version of their app doesn't allow installing of fonts. Sorry about that! |

Ahh, interesting suggestion! Let me think more about this |
| Comment by Marco Moreno [ 19/Mar/13 ] |

Sometimes I have bible studies till 9 or 10pm but sometimes in bed by then so I don't know. It just occurred to me that there is an ambient light sensor - perhaps that could be an option along with a time selection option. And/or perhaps a simple sun/moon toggling icon as a manual override. |
| Comment by Martin Denham [ 21/Mar/13 ] |
|
I implemented an auto-night-mode feature in And Bible using the light sensor. If it is dark And Bible switches to Night mode automatically, if user has selected Settings/Auto night mode. Experiment to see what light sensor values you get in different environments and then pick a value, below which you switch to night mode. I like this because sometimes I wake up at night and want to read the bible in bed but am almost blinded by the normal black-on-white screen (try it). This feature saved my eyes. |

When clicking in a daily devotional for a bible passage, it is generally an entire chapter. This makes the popup preview pane much to small to be usable. Making it resizable would help, but it would make more sense and intuitive to load it into the main bible window instead. I can work force this to happen by clicking a passage link in the preview pane and then closing it. |

Hi Marco, which devotional are you reading when you see this? |
| Comment by Marco Moreno [ 19/Mar/13 ] |

Actually, I rolled my own using "For the Love of God" by D. A. Carson for my own personal use. Carson's work is a slight modification of MCheyne along with his own excellent commentary. Each day's commentary is a several paragraph commentary so maximum screen real estate is desirable. Since Carson currently offers it freely online on his site (thegospelcoalition.org), I've contacted him requesting permission to redistribute it (hopefully via crosswire) and am awaiting a response. Contact me offline if you're interested in details about this devotional. |

We have Bible studies and the lessons reference many Bible verses. I would like to enter all the references for a lesson easily. As we go through the lesson, we would go to each verse, so please, let it be easy to jump to the previous and next verse we have bookmarked. My current solution is highlighting each verse and taking a screenshot. I then put all the screenshots in a new photo album for the lesson. I like being able to swipe to the next verse. Please, make it easier to enter bookmarks into a folder. For example, let me type all the references in a text editor, copy and paste the list to a textbox to import it as bookmarks in a folder. Another example, let us import bookmark folders from a text file in a CSV format or JSON. An easier way for you, would be to accept URLs for a reference to the app, so we could make webpages link to verses. When it opens, jump to and highlight the verse(s). pocketsword://translation/book/chapter/verse-start(/verse-end) I guess what I really want would be like a tour mode in other applications. We define a list of destinations and jump to the next destination with a swipe. |

Have you checked in any other of the Bible apps? Both BibleDesktop and AndBible work very differently to PocketSword (and use the same code), so I would want to know if it appears correctly in Xiphos, BibleTime or any of the other apps. I think this is a bug in the API rather than PocketSword, but please check for me! |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 06/Jan/13 ] |

Testing this in Xiphos, the behaviour is the same as in PocketSword. Evidence points to this being a badly formed module &/or a bug in the API. As there has been no further comments since my last comments where I asked for more information, I am going to close this bug. I don't believe it's a bug in PocketSword itself and unless there is further evidence to the contrary, I am leaving it at that and leaving it up to the reporter to report this bug to the API guys or the module guys. |

In the King James Version (1769) with Strongs Numbers and Morphology, it would be very helpful and easier to have an option to indicate words with a Strong's reference as "Underlined" instead of numbered. As you can imagine it is less distractive than the numbering. It is something that I became accustomed to using the Mantis Study Bible on the iPhone/iPad. This is just a suggestion for an enhancement. eSword for the iPhone and iPad is a blessing for me, please continue this project and I can't say Thank You enough. |

I am forbidden to browse the web. Therefore, because this app can be used to browse the web, I was forced to delete it. Although I have deleted Safari from my iPhone, web-browsing in PocketSword is possible when the hyperlinks in the information sections of certain modules are clicked (e.g. in John Lightfoot's commentary, the hyperlink for www.bf.org can be clicked to access the webpage). If the hyperlinks for all modules were disabled, then there would be no way for web-browsing in this app, and the problem would be solved. |

This won't be changed, as this is the intended behaviour. PocketSword won't work as a proper web browser, but will pull up certain web pages when required to provide additional information to what is embedded within a module. I hope you are able to find another app that will meet your needs. |

The <hi type="xxx"> yyy yyy</hi> construct allows for xxx to indicate underline. The osishtmlhref.cpp filter does not handle that value (nor most of them). This report probably should be moved to API. |
| Comment by Ko Chiu Shun [ 25/Oct/11 ] |

| Comment by Nic Carter [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
Are there any other front-ends that support this? If it's only Bible Desktop, that is using JSword (Java) rather than our C++ API, which would infer that it is indeed an API issue, with osishtmlhref.cpp not supporting that. |

When creating index for translation in Chinese, I found that the search result is poor in pocketsword and SPW, but good in Andbible. How to solve this problem? |
| Comments |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
Is this using a search index that you have created yourself or is it a search index that you downloaded from within PocketSword? And which module is it for? |
| Comment by DM Smith [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
AndBible uses JSword, which has much richer indexing and uses a Chinese analyzer for the text. SWORD uses StandardAnalyzer, which is appropriate only for some latinate languages. This is a request that SWORD have analysis based upon the language/script of the module. |
| Comment by DM Smith [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
A bit more info: most Lucene analyzers use whitespace to delineate words. This is not appropriate in some languages, such as Chinese. There are a variety of techniques to index Chinese, but to simplify: Suppose that there A, B, C were three Chinese characters and were given as ABC. This would index A, B, AB, C, and BC. In searching for AC, this would look for A, C and AC. With the various whitespace analyzers, there would be no result. The text contained ABC and only ABC would find it. |
| Comment by Ko Chiu Shun [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
The search index is created by PocketSword itself and it is a Chinese Module. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
Thanks for the clarification, I will look into it. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 31/Oct/11 ] |
|
Ok, I need some more clarification about this. You say that "The search index is created by PocketSword itself". However, PocketSword cannot create a search index – testing revealed that this would take a very long time and so I never added that code. So, how are you creating your search index? Is this in regard to the module that you sent me by email? @DM thanks for that information, PS is still lacking in non-whitespace searches, such as Chinese. |
| Comment by Ko Chiu Shun [ 31/Oct/11 ] |
|
It is my misunderstanding. The search index is created by "The sword Project" and I placed it into the module. |

ok, I don't think this is a PocketSword bug? Perhaps it is an API bug? What happens if you don't have the <p> in there? does it appear correctly? Does this appear as you wish in Xiphos or Eloquent or any other SWORD front-end? But have you found this bug in any existing modules that you can download inside PocketSword? If not, I'm going to say that it's an API bug or something like that. I'm not an OSIS expert so I'm not sure if your OSIS is properly formed or anything like that... |
| Comment by Ko Chiu Shun [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
I found it happened in Pocketsword and Eloquent but it worked correctly in The sword project, Xiphos, Bible desktop, AndBible. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
Ok, at this point I'm going to need a SWORD module that contains the issue you have found. Shoot me an email. Final comment is that you may need to be asking others about your OSIS. I am in no way an OSIS expert and so I cannot tell if your OSIS is valid or if it will work with osis2mod properly and so I cannot know if PocketSword is behaving correctly or if it's an API issue? This bug is probably in the API? But other modules with paragraphs work fine in PocketSword (such as the ESV), so perhaps you need to modify your OSIS for this to work? Unless you are certain that your OSIS is well formed, I am going to close this bug. But even if it is valid OSIS, our API does have certain issues that you can work around and still create valid OSIS. Perhaps you could email the sword-devel mailing list and ask there? |

| Comment by Nic Carter [ 01/Nov/11 ] |
|
Just another comment. I finally got around to testing this in Xiphos and it does not work as you said. I suggest that you go back and test your module properly in the different front-ends. I have tested it in the cutting-edge version of Xiphos (about to be released, I believe?), and it displays with the verse number on a different line to the verse text (for example, Luke ch1). Rather than ask each and every front-end to modify their code to get your module to work, I suggest you fix up your module so that it will work properly everywhere. That way you don't need to wait for them to update their applications? |

When there are merged verses into one, for example, in Job 3.1, verse 2-3 in GNT is combined into one verse. They are shown repeatedly even it is a valid OSIS. 1 xyz |

Hi there, I'll take a look into this, but would love to have a module and verse to look into – are you looking at a Greek New Testament module? Where is it from, and why does the NT have Job in it? |
| Comment by Ko Chiu Shun [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
Here is an example: ------------------- and the outcome is: ------------------- ABC ABC ABC ABC ------------------- I just take Good News Translation (not Greek New Testament) as an example for the merged verse. I am doing a Chinese Bible module. Thanks. |

|
Hmmm, ok, can you give me an example in a currently published SWORD module where this is occurring? I have fixed all known occurrences of this in our own modules, so it would be interesting to compare how it is done there with what you are doing? I wonder if it has something to do with you wrapping the verse in a paragraph tag? Could you please repeat your test without the <p> & the </p> in there and see what happens? |
| Comment by Ko Chiu Shun [ 25/Oct/11 ] |
|
I found it works well in The sword project but failed in Andbible, pocketsword and Bibledesktop. |

Did you try removing the <p>? And did it work in Xiphos? I have fixed this now but it won't appear in the App Store for a while. I'll move on to your other issues now. |

It was repeating the heading only, not the verse, but that is now fixed. |

I would like to have the bible book selection in the same language as the selected bible module. Eg. If the Afrikaans 1933/1953 bible is selected the bible book selection should also be in afrikaans. Eg. Genisis, Eksodus, Levitikus... Matheus, Markus, Lukas... |

ahh, that will require some optimisation of the locale code. I'll take a look and see what I can do – currently, if I load all the locales at launch time, it takes much longer for the app to launch! I've already optimised some of it, perhaps there are other bits I can improve to make this happen? |

If you have had the iphone in one language (i had it in swedish), and read the bible, the history gets updated. if you switch to another language (i switched to english) on the iPhone, and try to open something from the history that was created in the other language (swedish), it opens the right bible version, the right verse number, but in the same book as is open and i also think the same chapter (i guess th book references in history are stored in the language that was used) |

I've been unable to download modules. I'm a long-time Sword user on Linux, Mac, Windows, etc. and a system admin. I could get the list of modules fine with a refresh, and the download starts, but stalls and never finishes. I first tried to download MHC (which I know is big) and let it go for 30 minutes. I'm on a 10 Mbps connection with my wifi access point 10 feet away, full signal. This is on a 1st gen iPod Touch with iPhone OS 3.1 something (latest for 1st gen). I also tried the ESV which should have downloaded in under a minute, and it's been thirty minutes. The display shows Downloading (6 of 6 files) Installing: English Standard Version I'll let it sit but I have to go out shortly and will have to kill it. Oh and there is no "cancel" button, I have to kill the app. Since I haven't been able to get any of my preferred versions/aids on here I can't comment on the app itself, hopefully I can get something installed besides the KJV. I do hope this works as it would be awesome to have the Sword libraries on my iPod Touch. Thanks! Fred |

Okay, this is still unresolved, but I was able to work around it by using Module Maintainer mode. I downloaded MHC, ESV, LEB, WEB, NETfree modules on my Mac, started up Module Maintainer mode on my iPod, and then used Safari on my Mac to install them. The whole thing took about 10 minutes, so now I can use PocketSword. But the "easy" way is broken, at least for me. Thanks! Fred |

Weirder and Weirder. I did a hard power off/reboot on my iPod Touch and tried and successfully downloaded and installed Scofield notes. Thinking things were fixed, I tried German Elberfelder 1905 bible - same stall happened, waited and waited and it did not move or complete. Tried Module maintainer mode and it installed in seconds... |

Commentaries now show their verse numbers, so modules like TSK should be MUCH easier to navigate. Also, Bibles and commentaries will be padded with newlines at the end of the chapter, so you should be able to scroll the last verse to the top of the screen. Marking this as "Fixed" in v1.3.2 (on the App Store now) and let me know if it resolves this issue. Thanks! |

This was essentially a built in Note/Memo page where you could write notes and copy scriptures during teaching, sermons etc. Afterwards, you could export the Text for later reference, syncing to desktop etc. Currently iPhone doesn't permit fast switching of applications making effective note taking very difficult. Thus the solution has to be a Memo "inside" PocketSword. This idea based on Palm Bible+ memo feature (also based on the Sword Project) as the PalmOS also permits only a "single application" to run at once. Requirements:

After thinking about this, I don't think this will be implemented. Now that there is fast-app-switching, there's less need & I'd rather instead implement the ability for a user to create a "personal commentary" feature. If you can think up a good use-case for implementing this, please let me know, but hopefully iOS 4.0 resolved this for you? |

Ok, how tough is it to impliment these sort of things. I know that iphone apps are done in object C, and I have experience (I'm graduating this semester from Georgia Tech as an electrical engineer) in C and C++ and I have looked over my friend's shoulder who is working on an iphone app. If its not too much to take on for my first app work, then I would love to do a little work on it. I have decided to switch it back to the original <2616> version. It's ultra crazy when you have both morph & strong's displayed, but you're probably only going to be displaying both together for short periods of time, rather than for "normal" reading, so it should be ok. |

PS displays module images in some contexts but not all. In my NET and NETnote modules, NET has an image in the heading of all 1:1, and NETnote has an image in all n:1. The modules are ThML. NET's content has this form (from Gen 1:1): <div class="sechead"><center><img src="/images/netbible.jpg" /></center>The Creation of the World</div> NETnote's has this form: <center><img src="/images/msstrip.gif" /></center> Perhaps it is significant that the image in NET is in pre-verse heading between <div></div>. cf. display as seen in e.g. Xiphos. |

Hmmm, is this bug due to PocketSword not displaying headings? |
| Comment by karl kleinpaste [ 20/Apr/10 ] |
|
Oh...duh. PS doesn't display headings. OK, so that's why. So maybe this bug needs to be changed: Should offer to display headings, with an option just like displaying Strong's/morph. Removing the initial / in the image file pathname causes grief in the engine because it fails to generate the right filename in the filtered result. This isn't considered a bug; it's that module content is considered to have a relative root. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 21/Apr/10 ] |
|
ok, so you do need the initial "/". But, are these two modules simply not working cause headers aren't displayed? If that's true, I'll close this issue. You can add a new issue if you want headers to appear (I do want them there and am hoping to get onto it for v1.3!). |
| Comment by karl kleinpaste [ 21/Apr/10 ] |
|
If you're tracking a separate issue for introducing heading display, then just close this one. It seems likely that my NET will display images normally once you provide headings. If it doesn't, then I'll file another bug... |

Commentary (URL specified) which is partially downloadable over time. The app should be able to combine into one commentary data everytime a part of the commentary gets downloaded. This is useful for individuals/companies to write quiet time contents (like daily bread) When Progressive commentary is updated, it should ask or automatically jump to the verses which is updated QT is written for. So from the user's perspective, PocketSword can also be used to read QT and have another commentary updated periodically (hopefully daily). Technically rather easy, but this needs involvement of others, which is the hardest thing. Maybe not something can be done in a short-term in |

I wonder if this would be solved when I add support for daily devotionals? There is a SWORD module type designed for that, but I haven't added support for that module type yet. |

When a verse is being quoted in a service, choosing book chapter verse with iPhone default dropdown is too slow. a window with 6 rows, each row with 280 width can make up 1680 dots. One dot represents a chapter. That should cover the whole Bible. The user can simply tap a point on a row to join directly to a chapter |

I'm trying to reproduce this, but I can't. Can you confirm that it still occurs on subsequent launches of the app? If it does still occur, can you try switching your iPhone's language to English and then back to Chinese and see if that fixes it? Either way, let me know and I'll try to hunt down the issue & try to prevent it happening in the future. |

Thanks for your reply. I tried to switch the language preference but still have problem. My iPhone is jailbreak (3.1.2 - 7D11), not sure if it is related. |

I tried Japanese and French, both are ok. But Simplify Chinese and Traditional Chinese do not work. Thanks. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 06/Apr/10 ] |
|
The way I handle both Simplified and Traditional Chinese changed between v1.2.0 and v1.2.1 and the only thing I can think of is that the upgrade from v1.2.0 to v1.2.1 didn't work properly for you, and so you didn't get the new translations. I have now modified the code to try to make sure it won't happen for future updates, which will be incorporated into v1.2.2, but for now, you could try to remove PocketSword and add it again from the App Store. Unfortunately you'd need to install your Bibles again, but I think that would probably be the quickest solution, rather than waiting for v1.2.2 to be released. |
| Comment by Barry Tang [ 06/Apr/10 ] |
|
I tried to remove it and add it again from the App Store, it doesn't help. Is it possible for me to get the 1.2.0 ipa so that I can restore it manually? Thank you for developing PocketSword, it is really good. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 06/Apr/10 ] |
|
Shoot me an email (you can use the "Email Us" button in PocketSword if you don't have my email address). Due to the security with the iPhone OS, I can't just give you the 1.2.0 ipa. But there are other options we can pursue. |

Argh, sorry, found this bug. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 07/Apr/10 ] |

The way Chinese is done is tricky - it can either be zh-Hans (Simplified Chinese) or zh-Hant (Traditional Chinese). But I have to handle 2 localisation methods: both the SWORD lib localisation and then the Apple iPhone OS localisation. Unfortunately, they are only semi-compatable, and I need to massage things for both types of Chinese. And there is a bug in that code that was introduced in v1.2.1, when I added the Simplified Chinese book names. |

On this release it's only possible to scroll one chapter and you have to manually chose the next chapter in the Navigator. I want it to be totally seamless, so you can scroll through the hole Bible, between chapters and even scroll into the next Bible book. |

Mind if you look at this one again? I really think having a continuous reading mode helps one concentrate on reading; swiping left/right kinda breaks your cadence. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 30/Mar/10 ] |
|
In 1.2.0 I added something to the < button (to go to the previous chapter) so that it goes to the last verse in the previous chapter. I did that cause I was getting frustrated at wanting to read the last bit in the previous chapter to get context of the start of the current chapter. I'll take a look at this again soon, but it won't be for 1.3.0, sorry. |

| Comment by Ishmael Vargas [ 01/Apr/10 ] |

I was just thinking, how about putting a marker that separates a chapter, like making the first verse marker a drop cap or putting a line between chapters? Or adding a goto button that brings you to the beginning or end of a chapter? Haven't really thought about it much, just thinking out loud. |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 02/Feb/11 ] |
|
Thinking about v1.4.0 & looking at the remaining items here, saw that I didn't reply to you - sorry! Did you know you can tap on the time, at the top of the screen, and that lets you jump to the top of the chapter? I'm not planning on thinking about this for v1.4.0 – let me know if you're still interested in this feature in a possible future release... |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 14/Feb/11 ] |
|
I'm going to close this, as I don't think I will implement this. Instead I have added swipe-to-progress (either forwards or backwards) & going backwards will take you to the last verse in the previous chapter. If there's enough support for continuous progression, I'll look into it, but I don't think it's too much of an issue. |

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge pop-up links referring to the present open book of the Bible, take you to Genesis or other books. All tags that are in the present book, for instance at Psalm 1:1 under "Blessed" TSK lists 2:12; 32:1-2; 34:8; 84:12; 106:3; 112:1 etc. and should pop-up with Psalms 2:12; Psalms 32:1-2; Psalms 34:8; Psalms 84:12 etc, but goes to Genesis 2:12, Genesis 32:1-2; Genesis 34:8; Exodus 34:12; Deuteronomy 3:3, etc. So far as I have found this only happens when you try to pull up the pop-up verse window. I had noticed this earlier and thought it was just sending to Genesis, but found today that it was all over the place. Thanks for all the work on this. I use it each morning and really love the speed I can survey a topic in the Bible with this electronic wonder. |

I tried to send this the other day. Sorry for delay. I just tried it w/ kjv, net free, esv. All reproduced it. Maybe I was not clear. Ahh, I have found it. I am using the TSK module from the "CrossWire 2" download source. It has fixed these issues, whereas the TSK from "CrossWire 1" has the issues you are reporting. Sorry it took me so long to track this down! This is a module issue, not a PocketSword issue, per say. My suggestion is that you remove the TSK module from your iPod touch and re-install it using the "CrossWire 2" version. |

This is a module issue, the module needs fixing. Instead, download the TSK module from "CrossWire 2". |

Discovered that even tho this is a module issue, there is something I could be doing better in order to work around this. Have implemented that for the next release, so the TSK from CrossWire 1 will actually behave correctly. |

I'm currently thinking about what this would look and feel like . . . My thought was that if you switched to landscape mode, it would change to full screen mode. Then you would change chapters via swiping, or to do anything else, you switch back to portrait mode. |
| Comment by Ishmael Vargas [ 19/Mar/10 ] |
|
I was thinking of having the full screen mode in both portrait and landscape mode. Tapping anywhere on the text brings up the menus. Also on the changing of chapters, what do you think about having a continuous reading mode so that all the action you need to do is swipe upward? |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 26/Sep/10 ] |
|
So, I just implemented full screen mode in landscape mode. and then realised that after all the hard work was done, it was simple to make it work in portrait mode too. So, navigation is via swipe while in full screen mode & you switch to and from fullscreen mode via a 2-finger tap & hold – how does that sound? Will be in the next beta, whenever that is... |
| Comment by Ishmael Vargas [ 26/Sep/10 ] |
|
Two finger tap? Sounds ok but wouldn't it work with just a single tap to show or hide the toolbars? |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 28/Sep/10 ] |

it's now a 2-finger tap, rather than a 2-finger tap-and-hold. Will see how that goes... |

If you find problems in any of the modules, feel free to add a bug report to http://www.crosswire.org/bugs/browse/MOD noting it The "search" in the dictionary tab only searches through the list of keys, so when you type a letter while you have Strong's open, it will jump to the very last entry (it does a string compare, FYI). I have no plans to add search to dictionaries at this point, so I'm going to close this bug and say it works as intended – please comment if you're not happy with that! |

When bookmarks are in folders, you'll be able to set a highlight colour for that folder, so you can quickly and easily see if a verse is "highlighted"/bookmarked. Hopefully that will be sufficient, and then you can go look at your bookmarks to see related verses? Eventually, you'll be able to add notes to verses, where you could also have your own cross-references if you'd like, so I'm not planning on implementing this issue, sorry. |

Decided that instead of showing the verse with the bookmark entry, instead you can give it a "name" or description to help distinguish between different verses (along with the Bible ref displayed) |

When new bookmarks are added, the list could be scrolled down because when the list gets longer than the screen, you aren't 100% sure that it was added or not when you don't see it added in the list. (I am typing this on my iPhone, accidentally pressed submit while giving it a topic) |

There is a JavaScript method that is meant to do this but it doesn't currently work on the iPhone (at least, when I tried using it in November). Instead I had to hack a method to work & this is what I came up with. It works, but simply doesn't update while you're still scrolling. If you want to jump to a specific verse number, you can always tap on the ref title & select the verse number there? Especially useful in getting to high verse numbers in chapters like Psalm 119! let me know what you think? |

search with many words, for instance: (Loved one), would be equivalent to (Loved AND one) it would seem more natural that if you add more things in the search you get a narrower search result, not the other way around. |

a solution could be to write -> loved && one searching for love will give results for that word only. love* needs to be explicitly requested. I admit that this words differently to how google search works, so it may not be entirely familiar to everyone, but in the next version I am planning on adding extra features that will make it even less like google search, so I'm not too concerned right now. Thanks for those links |

How about changing the layout of the search? Tapping on the search button would show a textbox. Below the textbox are the options "Any word" and "All words". What do you guys think? I was also thinking of adding a new button "Advanced Search" which give the user more options like searching only OT, NT or specific books, or searching Strong's numbers, etc. I know it's a little off topic but I'm just thinking out loud. |

I'm thinking the solution to this is to redo the search tab. I was about to start on it just then, but remembered that v1.2 is meant to be strong's numbers ONLY, and I don't want to delay the release even more by adding yet another change! "any word" vs "all words" (basically, is the search an OR or an AND search) go wild with brainstorming – as long as you won't be hurt if you suggest something and I don't add it... ps: thanks for the suggestions! |

Thanks Christoffer, I think I need to have a switch on the search page for the "*" results: "exact word search" vs "fuzzy search" The exact logic of each of the buttons/switches needs to be figured out later, but getting an idea of what buttons/switches should be available is very good, thanks! (So that makes 3 buttons/switches so far!) [as a side note, I never use AND in my searches -- I always use && because it's quicker and easier to type and is only an additional 4 touches. But, yes, I know the search UI is sorta broken. I was really struggling to figure out how to do it "right" and gave up in the end and simply got something out there so users could search, knowing that I could fix up the UI later!] |

Great discussion. I definitely agree that search is one of the features that makes me use the digital version of the Bible and keeping the keystrokes as low as possible would be great. I recommend having these defaults on search:
Buttons below the search bar:
; where Any and All would work like a radio button, and NT & OT would work like a checkbox (tapping both OT and NT would search the whole Scripture) Advanced Search would have additional search options like:
Also, I think it would be better to separate the history from the search. |
| Comment by Trenton D. Adams [ 08/Mar/10 ] |

I would recommend using the ranking feature of lucene, and having it turned on by default with a check box to turn it on and off. This would probably be the quickest way of getting better results, along with possibly using "AND" as suggested, when not using the ranking feature. The motivation for the suggestion, generally speaking, people don't want to spend a lot of time typing something in to search with all the lucene search features. The ranking feature does a decent job at ranking, but still isn't perfect. |

just discovered how to do a search for a Strong's Number: search for search for Both need to have "lemma:" at the start. I'm noting it here, cause I'll do this automagically when you use the "search greek strongs" or "search hebrew strongs" options -> all you'll need to do is input the number to search for (or there may be other ways of searching, too, perhaps straight from the "info pane" that appears when you touch a <S> next to a word in the KJV with Strong's)... |

I would really like to at least be able to set the default search logic. since i want to type as few words as possible, then adding another word should filter the results (i.e using the AND logic by default) to provide less hits the more you type until you have found the verse you are looking for. |
| Comment by Thomas Stuart Bockman [ 21/Jul/10 ] |

AND definitely needs to be the default search mode, not OR. Beyond that, I think Ishmael's suggestions are good. I was trying to find 2 Chronicles 7:14, from which I remembered included the phrase "If my people" and the word "humble", so I searched for On the other hand, searching for Great app, BTW. Thanks for all your hard work! |

ok, have had my first stab at this. Ended up having AND as the default, fuzzy isn't on by default (but it will remember your setting each time you run PocketSword, so in the world of iOS 4.x it should remember it for a while), defaults to searching the entire Bible, you can search for Strong's Numbers, and hopefully the UI is actually quite usable. |

It seems that when you scroll down, the verse that is topmost visible is the verse that is shown to be "active" in the top navigation button. it might be a good idea to adjust this slightly, because fon instance in picture IMG_0837.PNG you see that only half of the active verse is visible. Could it be good to have the "topmost fully visible verse" to be the active one? Also, I wanted to bookmark the last verse in a chapter, i cannot because i can't scroll it fully up to become the active one. |

There's actually 2 issues here, the first being for what verse number is displayed in the ref title. After going back and forth between trying what you suggested and trying what is currently implemented, I decided that the current method works better for now. Have a look at the commentary tab. Especially when you have MHCC or (even more so) MHC open. What verse number should be displayed in the title when you're half-way through viewing the text for v1-5? Should it continue to say v1 or should it be saying v6? I chose to make it continue to say v1 rather than to jump to a verse that you're not looking at. The second issue you have here is for bookmarks & the method we use to bookmark a verse/passage. Please open a separate ticket for that. |

This is a minor issue... At first when i pressed the "next chapter" i didn't immediately realize that it was "processing my action". I think it could be a good idea to enhance the "i am processing your action right now" feeling when changing chapters. either have the animation more visible or at a different location. possibly even removing the current content to emphasise that something is about to happen. One option would be to replace the current text with a message that the next content is being loaded. However, it might be a good idea the have the next and previous chapters cached, so that they would emerge quicker when the user want's tp view. |

With a possiblity to see the strong's numbers when reading in a certain transaltion would make this the ultimate bible studying app. Let's say I am reading in a swedish translation that lack strong's numbers. And i then discover that a certain passage might use the same original greek/hebrew words as another passage. I tap a "strongs" button in the bottom bar, and get my translation that has strongs numnerings, which i have set to KJV with Strong's numbers, i tap on the word "son" in Romans 8:14 wich i was reading, i see what it is in the original greek. Then i wonder, is this the same word that is used in a certain other passage? In the word explanation view, I tap a button that lets me see all occurences of that particular word, i see all verses with that word highlighted. if i tap on one of the verses, a new tab is opened and i get to the right place in the book/chapter (either in you standard reading translation or the one that had the strong's numbers). If i want to get back to where i was before i open the "previous tab" |

It's conceivable that something like in tabs2.jpg could be done. However, the way I had thought this would be done is through going through your History & also your Bookmarks. After thinking about this, I'm not going to allow extra "tabs" in PocketSword. To achieve this functionality, there is the History section where you can go back and forth through verses. The idea of having different Bible modules open at the same time is still up in the air, however. If you want to have the sort of thing you have described here, I suggest you use a laptop... |

I'm not sure if I'd be happy to do this right now. I'd need to think through the consequences of this. As a trade-off, in the next version (v1.1) you'll be able to swipe to the right to go to the next chapter/book & swipe left to go to the previous one. So you can scroll to the end of the chapter and to continue you can either swipe right or touch the > button at the top of the screen. I think I prefer this method rather than infinite scrolling, but you may need to try it out to see what you'd think. |

I'll try it when v1.1 comes. For me it's only about easy moving around in the Bible, the easier and the more intuitive, the better! We'll test and see and when I've tested v1.1 I'll give a comment. |

I'm going to stick with the swipes for the time being. Let me know how it goes in 1.1b1 (which I deployed tonight). |

Now I run v1.1 and it's much better and easier to change chapter. |

I would appreciate parallel windows, were the user can choose to either have two Bibles or Bible/Commentary or Bible/Notes. It would be good if those windows would be adjustable in size. Which ever you choose to move, the other shall follow to show the same verses. |

I need to change some of the underlying code in order to get this to work. So I'll start to look into that after the v1.1 release |

i guess parts of http://www.crosswire.org/bugs/browse/PS-5 ( reading one translation and jumping to another on that supports strong's numbers) would be supported by this this feature... i would suggest swiping left and right would give you the different translations/books that are scrolled to the same place as the visible one. i know the swiping left and right are in 1.1 (http://www.crosswire.org/bugs/browse/PS-4) meant to change chapters, that is good too. |

Hmm, if it would change with the rubber-banding method, it might need to detect two occurrences of the rubber banding, since the first time you may just have reached the bottom and wish to read until the end, but if you would "scroll" down an additional time past the boundary it could take you to the next page |

I don't exactly understand what Christoffer mean with "rubber-banding", but I'm very influenced by reading by my Bible first on Palm (first Bible Reader by Asaisoft and then PalmBible?+) and now on iPhone with Olivetree for many years. I also made the first Svenska Folkbibeln (swedish) for Palm 2003. I like to read two versions of the Bible parallel, I also want to have the possibility to use the parallel window for Commentaries (mine or others). It would be great to have the possibility to have KJV with Strongs numbers (or any other Bible with Strong numbers) in the parallel windows, so you can choose any Strong hyperlink number and then have the translation/commentary (it's possible within MacSword)! I've seen that the SDK have a possibility to have Pop Up windows. It would be good if the parallel windows could be read in both Portrait or Landscape and could be locked in that position, but that should maybe be another topic? See pictures! |

How is it with readability in olivetree when you have the iPhone in portrait view and have two versions open? i added some thoughts as http://www.crosswire.org/bugs/secure/attachment/10533/paralell.jpg (the "second" version has strongs numbers, and when you press a word you get the explanation opened..) |
| Comment by Hans P Lindblad [ 06/Jan/10 ] |

As you see on the pictures above from Olivetree the parallel view in Portrait is under each other, and that's bad. On my old Palm you could only use it in Portrait, but the two parallel windows are beside each other. I think myself that Bible Readers with parallel windows shall ALWAYS be besides each other, both in Portrait and in Landscape! But I prefer reading the Bible parallel in Landscape, and want the possibility to lock it in Landscape even if I lay on my pillow and read it on the side, so it won't use the iPhone automatic rotation. I also like a lot that the sizes between the windows are adjustable, I prefer to have the window I'm actually reading a little bit larger then the other. Re mindstorming in Photoshop: Something like that will be excellent! |

I would really love to have parallel panes that sync like Tecarta or olive tree's last version. I currently use the olive tree hcsb study bible with study notes in one adjustable pane and the text in the other. Also- you have the first bible I have seen with Chinese pinyin. I would love to have pinyin in one and characters in the other. Better yet- an option for 3 panes on iPad and have english, pinyin, and characters in three panes- Wow- that would rock! What do you think Nic Carter? |

I don't know it it helps but I just added this in the last release of And Bible. Users were really keen on this feature. There is a demo video here: http://tinyurl.com/SplitDemo The code is all Java so won't be any use but the video might give some thoughts regarding design. |

There is a Bookmark function, but what I really use is a Notes function! A TOP function would be to sync Notes in PocketSword with your own MacSword Notes on the Mac! I saw that Manfred Bergmann has helped so you already have a good connection. I think it's good with a possibility to choose different icons for different type of topics. I may be influenced of using Olivetree now, but I like the function were I can organize the Notes in different folders. |

I'd love to get this in for the release after next – I've almost finished work on v1.1 now, so it won't make it into that release. |

That's great! I hope Manfred Bergmann is open to do something so You can sync Notes via Wifi with MacSword! |

How about including an option to sync to Google Notebook or Evernote? |

Note syncing would be really great... Btw.: PocketSword is the best iPhone Bible app in my opinion. |

Is it possible to have the notes work independently of the Bible section? It would be great if you could have your notes open and be able to move from one verse to another so you could add reference to other verses. @Markus I second that! |

iCloud sounds great & we'll be looking into that after the iPad version is released. |

First I have really longed for this program, a Sword Reader for iPhone/iPod Touch, be blessed! When I first saw the SDK and the tool with the "Rolling Bar" that is used in many Apps, I thought myself it would be nice for navigation of a Bible. But honestly it's much faster with buttons (see attachment). You get a better overview of the books! I understand this is 1.0.0 and it's great, but I will give some input because I like it and want to use it as my daily Bible Reader, so this is not to criticize, I just want to make proposals. |

Great idea, I have had some positive feedback on the "Rolling Bar" method of Bible navigation and a few requests for this method of Bible navigation as well, so I think I'll create a preference and allow users to choose between both methods (for the time being, anyway!). |

That's great Nic, then users have two possible choices and can try which they prefer! |
| Comment by James RInkevich [ 05/Mar/10 ] |

The rolling bar only shows the books in abridged bibles. Ideally it should list all of the books the NT, the LXX, and the Geez Bibles. As a minimum, at least all of the books names at the Synod of Rome in 382AD, which has been the standard list for Divine Liturgical reading for 16 centuries for the majority of Christians. For example, in the Duoay-Rheims or LXX, the book of Sirach can't be found in that list. |
| Comment by Scott Beaman [ 30/Mar/10 ] |
|
Another possibility for the rolling bar could be that instead of having to roll all the way down to chapter 50 from 1, |
| Comment by Nic Carter [ 06/Apr/10 ] |

@James it should show all the Books of the Bible that are available in that translation. So, if you install a Bible that has the extra books available, it will show them. Unfortunately, the Downloads section of PocketSword doesn't contain any such Bibles. So you need to manually install them yourself, but they do work. @Scott I don't think that is possible using the built-in scroller on the iPhone? @Hans I've implemented a button method for v1.2.2, still doing some minor work on it, but it should be available soon. |
