Module Norsk has text errors in Psalm 119

I have been discussing this module today with our Norwegian friend Pål Gjerde Gammelsæter.

He knows of other text errors in the Norsk module such as spelling mistakes and typos that had escaped the proofreaders mentioned in the conf file.

He has volunteered to assist in the correction tasks.

Also to consider:

Many of the OSIS note elements could be usefully enhanced to become/include proper OSIS xrefs.

I just pasted Ps.119.11 from the Norsk module into Google Translate.

With my whole heart have I sought thee: let me not wander from your commandments! 0 I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. 1 from every evil path, I kept my feet so that I might keep thy word. 2 From your lover I'm not deviated, for you have taught me. 3 How sweet are your words to my taste, more than honey to my mouth! 4 Through your precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. 5 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 6 I have sworn, and I have kept it, taking care of your righteous laws. 7 I'm hurt much; Lord, keep me alive according to your word! 8 Let my mouth voluntary sacrifices pleasing to you, O Lord, and teach me your laws! 9 I always go with your life in your hands, but your law, I have not forgotten.

From this evidence, it would seem that the text issue may have been something which occurred when the text was captured in 2008 from (new source) http://tore.vamraak.no/bibelen.asp

Sanity check:

I also pasted Ps.119.176 into Google translate:

I have gone astray; seek out your servant get! for I have not forgotten your commands.

cf. KJV text for the same verse:

I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

This is evidence that there is no "offset" issue after the problem verse range (10-17).

A similar check for verse 18 confirms this observation.

It was not a capture problem at our end. The issue exists in the online source text:

Using Google translate the other way round, pasting the BETH stanza (vss 9-16) from the KJV, here is the Norwegian:

Here is the GIMEL stanza (vss 17-24):

From these equivalents, and knowing that both KJV and Norsk 1930 texts would be part of the vast database for Google translate, it should be possible to make the corrections to the Norsk module source text in this part of Psalm 119.

Google translate is (of course) less than perfect, as evidenced from the phrase "Deal bountifully" left untranslated in verse 17 output above.

Yet by comparison with what exists in the online source text at http://tore.vamraak.no/bibelen.asp - we should be in a position to remove the spurious extra "sub-verses" and leave the correct text for verses 10-17.

OK - so here's my first attempt at a correction. I merely removed all the text from the numeral zero in verses 10-17.

Google translate gave some interesting "howlers", didn't it?

Despite the Google "howlers", it's quite clear that this is the correct solution.

So the detective work has paid off, and we can progress to rebuild the module using imp2vs, after merely repeating the described deletions on the complete IMP file.

The Norsk module has been rebuilt as version 1.6 and sent to modules at crosswire dot org

This rebuild does not include any other corrections (such as those needed for spellings or OCR errors).
