It is nothing more than a module markup flaw, and has presumably been
there since the dawn of time, considering that ASV is an ancient GBF
module.

As seen coming out of the engine, this is what Xiphos is given to work
with. Notice the opening <i>, 3 lines down, which is not closed. Bear
in mind that HTML tags nest, so the (useless) <i></i> at the bottom does
not close the preceding isolated <i>.

   The Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that
   man through whom the Son of man is [1] betrayed! good were it
   [2] for that man if he had not been born.
   <i>
   <a href="passagestudy.jsp?action=showNote&type=n&value=1&module=ASV&passage=Matthew+26%3A24">
   <small>
   *n
   </small>
   </a>
   <i></i>

This comes about due to the module markup, which is in error:

   The Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto
   that man through whom the Son of man is<RF>1<Rf> betrayed! good were
   it<RF>2<Rf> for that man if he had not been born. <FI><RF>1) See
   marginal note on Mt 10:4. 2) Gr <FI>for him if that man<Fi> <Rf>

See 2 lines up, <FI>, which has no closing <Fi>. The bottom note
RF...FI...Fi...Rf does not affect that erroneous opening.
