Great explanation! Unfortunately I could not follow it! ;-)

Are you saying current schema:

Does validate attributes: referenceType, milestoneID, milestoneIDREF

Does not validate xs:string content of <reference>HERE IS NOT 
VALIDATED</reference>

?
