You get warnings from lintian if you don't -- you would otherwise end up
creating large separate packages for every architecture, each of which
has the same large set of data files in them.  That's bad from an
overall distribution efficiency point of view -- why replicate all that
data so many times (i386, amd84, ARM, etc.)?  It would waste space and
bandwidth on all the mirrors, etc.

So, to avoid that, you put architecture-dependent stuff (the actual
program binaries, basically) in one package, and have it depend on a
separate -data package, which is the same for all CPU architectures.

According to debian/changelog, we broke that out in bibletime 2.0-1, on
Tue, 02 Jun 2009 23:37:30 -0700 .
