Tom,

I have compiled sword svn and bibletime git HEAD on ubuntu 10.04 and 
fedora 12. Both work fine for me.

Is it possible you have the sword package (1.6.1) installed 
(/usr/lib/libsword.so on ubuntu) and have also installed when you built 
the sword source (/usr/local/lib/libsword.a). It so, you need to remove 
the package version if you install from the source version.
