Thanks for answering.  I did assume the problem would have something to 
do with it being a Mepis package.  The versions of libcurl (both 
required and installed) seem to match but who knows?  I'm not a package 
expert...  I downgraded to the Kubuntu package 1.6.4...  :@(

I downloaded the source files from sourceforge.  when I attempted to 
compile, I got as far as "configure"...  the script said it couldn't 
find my X libraries!  <rolls eyes>

<sigh>  "These things are sent to try us!"  :@(
