Is anyone interested in assisting me in creating a bootable Linux cd with sword / Bibletime or GnomeSword? I feel this would be an incredible evangelical tool as I am about to embark on two short term mission trips in the fall. Having the ability to tote a laptop with a cd that just boots up to bibletime with the modules in Portugise and Spanish as well as english not only could help bridge some of the communications gap, but if the hardware is available to the pastors in the field, I could leave behind the CDs / ISOs for them. I made a few attempts some time ago and was moderatly sucessful in creating a bootable CD with Bibletime and Sword. The autodetect hardware script was from the AdvanceMAME game system and worked on 50% of the hardware I tested it on. I tried using Knoppix but never sucessfully. email me if you're interested in testing ISO / assisting in debugging / troubleshooting a bootable distrobution darrin@carrolltononline.com |

I know this isn't quite what you're working towards, but the SWORD CDs can actually run from the CD in Windows, not requiring any software installation. |

Definitely an AWESOME idea! Though I am new to linux I would throw the following general suggestions out there: Needs a good Office program included (OOo) for good ability to study. Sword Disto needs to have ability to save to either USB key, floppy or CD/DVD r or rw media. Make it "mimimal" ie under 200 M so it can be saved to a Mini CD. Don't need lots of screen savers etc. As well Don't put 40 translations in it, infact you might want to make "localized"versions (one for english one for everything else since there is as many english versions available as there are others total) BTW this "project or project to be" is in my prayers. I am working on a Knoppix CD adapted for use with Bibletime. Help is appreciated. I aim to have a small ISO with not very much else but Bibletime and Arabic, Farsi and Turkish Bible, + commentaries, dictionaries and worship songs. I am struggling at two points : The Turkish module produces odd characters, it appears that its unicode encoding is off as it is most definetely not a font issue Letters not working are the i without a dot, the g with circumflex and c and s with hook underneath. The other - biggerr problem is the OSIS encoding of the Farsi text. i have one text which appears to be copyright free, is accurate and quite readable, so defientely worthwhile to pursue., but I have not much clue of any of this XML encoding. Anyone keen to help? |

Hi Darrin, Folks, This is really a good idea! I offer my help to your project. Suggestion: try "Morphix". This is something similar to Knoppix (in fact it is somewhat based on Knoppix (... which in turn is based on Debian)) I dont have (not yet) big experience on Morphix. But Morphix seems to be more modular than Knoppix. The scalability seems to be better. that way you could create a small image with for example just bibletime and one or two modules - and a big image with GnomeSword, Bibletime an a bunch of modules - with almost the same setup. Another question: should that ISO image also allow for installation on Harddisk? (maybe also on windoze?) |

Why should you have a live cd when you could use a normal installation? Why ? As this would allow people to use the CD without leaving traces on their computer. There are a fair number of countries where Bibles can not be imported too. |

Many of us work at computors that do not allow us to install anything on the it. But we can run off CD's. Right now the CD is too crowded to make it useful to run off. It would be nice to be able to make a CD to use that has the translations and commentaries that you personally like to use. |

I think there are around 250 - 400 MB of free memory on a CD, depending on Desktop (KDE/Gnome/Light). What modules should be included? BibleTime/GnomeSword? KJV? what else? willi ... |
