Thanks to Jmarsden

I found the solution was to remove all signs of of compiling from src and do the following:

wget https://launchpad.net/~pkgcrosswire/+archive/...ire-ppa_1.7~08.04_all.deb

sudo dpkg -u crosswire-ppa_1.7~08.04_all.deb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libsword8
